๐Ÿง’ How to Get a Pennsylvania Driver’s License (U.S. Citizens Under Age 18)

 

Step 1: Study the PA Driver’s Manual


Step 2: Complete the DL-180 

  • Download Form DL-180 (Non-Commercial Learner’s Permit Application)

  • Must be filled out by a licensed physician, physician assistant, or certified registered nurse practitioner

  • Your physical must be less than 1 year old


Step 3: Gather Required Documents

Bring these items to the Driver License Center:

  1. Completed DL-180 & DL180C

  2. Proof of Identity (Birth Certificate or U.S. Passport)

  3. Social Security Card

  4. Two proofs of PA residency (utility bills, lease, etc. in parent's name + student report card)

  5. Completed DL-180TD: Parent/Guardian signature (must be notarized or signed in person at the center)

  6. ๐Ÿ’ณ Payment (~$45.50 — card or check only, no cash)


Step 4: Pass Vision and Knowledge Tests

  • At the Driver License Center:

    • Take the vision screening

    • Take the knowledge test (18 questions; you can miss up to 3)

    • If you pass, you'll receive your learner’s permit


Step 5: Behind-the-Wheel Practice

  • With your learner’s permit, you must:

    • Wait at least 6 months before taking your road test

    • Complete 65 hours of supervised driving, including:

      • 10 hours of night driving

      • 5 hours in bad weather

    • Practice with a licensed adult 21 years or older


Step 6: Schedule and Take the Road Test

  • Once eligible, schedule online or call 717-412-5300.
    Bring the following to the road test:

    • Your learner’s permit

    • DL-180C (Parent/Guardian certification of 65 hours)

    • Valid vehicle registration and insurance

    • Accompanying driver’s license (must be valid)

    ๐Ÿ“ Note: If you fail the test:

    • Wait 7 days before retaking it

    • You can attempt the test up to 3 times per permit

๐ŸŽ‰ After Passing the Test

  • You’ll have your junior driver’s license until age 18

  • Some driving restrictions apply (e.g. passenger and nighttime driving limits)
